The Good Shepherd Print

Whether it be David, or Joseph, Moses or Jesus the imagery of a shepherd is referenced widely through scripture from beginning to end. On many occasions we, Gods people, are described as being his flock (his followers), and God our faithful shepherd (our caretaker and guide).

This symbology is meaningful for multiple reasons, shepherds represent a leader, a protector, a healer and a rescuer of the lost and hurt of the flock, they keep the flock together and provide them food and shelter, they lead the flock to good grass and fight off their enemies.

The "good shepherd" specifically is described in the bible as someone who is even willing to give their life for their charge.

This relationship goes both ways, we are told in the bible that we, his sheep, should also recognize his voice, and only his voice. If the voice of a thief calls for the sheep or approaches them they will run, if the voice of a stranger calls, they will not come, for they only recognize their own shepherds voice. This can be witnessed even today when you see a farmer call to his flock across the hills, and they come only to the sound of his voice.

This is symbolic for us as believers that we should only listen to the call of Jesus' voice, and only follow what he says, for He is our good shepherd, not the voice of the world or the 'thief'.
